Behind the Studio: Gail and Charelle

Tell us a little bit about how your yoga journey began.

We’re two sisters in pursuit of helping others find their most positive state of mind.

Our dream to start a business collided with a love for yoga and an attitude of hell yes! From the outset our vision was to create a business that was about more than just the classes we offered, it was about creating a lifestyle that you loved. Providing a positive energy that empowered people to live the best life possible. We really started from a goal of sharing the positive vibes one person, one class at a time.

What inspired you to take the leap and open up your own studio?

We opened the doors to our first studio in Geelong in 2009 with the sole aim of helping other souls live their best lives possible - finding their 'upstate'. Our wellness wave flowed to the opening of our Torquay studio in 2014, and we launched our city studio in Balaclava in October 2018.

Speaking of inspiration, what words do you live by? Name your personal or professional motto.

Dream big, don’t sweat the small stuff and have a grateful heart.

What sort of experience are you looking to cultivate when someone steps foot inside your yoga studio?

Upstate exists to make a difference. And that can be as simple as making someone’s day just that little bit brighter. Every class we teach is a new chance to motivate, connect and share our passion. If you leave us happier than when you arrived, we’ve done our job.

Describe the kind of music your teachers play during class. What's the music vibe like?

Whether our students are settling in for a Yin Yoga class or taking their mats for Power Flow our playlists are all about inspiring everyone's inner yogi. We aim to align our class music vibes with the upstate vibes that are enriched into each part of the student experience.

Each playlist is as unique as our teachers, however we believe in finding the appropriate balance between upbeat and unwind. For example our Power Flow classes begin with a light mellow tune and as the body starts to move and warm the beat builds a little more before winding down again for a calming Savasana mood.

If you leave us happier than when you arrived, we’ve done our job.

While we're in the neighbourhood, what local spots should we check out before or after class?

Just a short stroll from our iconic yellow door you will find Las Chickas. Stop in here for all your favourite eats and post exercise refuel needs. Also part of the Balaclava block, The Little Hen is where you can grab all sorts of great health and earth conscious pantry, snack and household supplies.

Anybody with a furry friend or looking for a great park spot head to the end of Balaclava Road to Caufield Park. And for those visting the Melbourne area and are looking for a bit of a café crawl fix the Alley is your go to for plant based dining.

If you could collaborate with someone on a dream project, who would it be and why?

Whitney Wolfe, Founder Bumble Bizz. We love how Whitney is empowering women in business to collaborate, to create healthy relationships to live a positive, productive life.

Lastly, what are you most proud of when it comes to your studio and/or your community?

We are most proud of the Upstate Team and the incredible community we have built. It makes us incredibly proud that almost all of our teachers started out as our clients. They came to Upstate loving the classes and now they are leading others on that journey. We have built this amazing environment of positive energy, encouragement and support.
